My Companion
On a warm Summer day in July of 1962, I met my sweet wife, Edna Hancock Lovelace. A whirlwind courtship began and we were married a short time later. We were just a couple of months short of age 19 when we were married on November 24, 1962. We both agree now that we were probably too young, not financially prepared, and do not recommend those circumstances to others seeking marriage, but it has worked for us. We had some lean times in the early years, especially when I was drafted into the US Army at age 22, having been married almost four years. After the two year obligation in the military, it was almost like starting over, as we had to begin all over again. But God's grace is always sufficient and he has blessed and sustained us now for 47 years together. Edna retired a few years ago from her job as a pharmacy clerk for almost 20 years. She has always been involved in the teaching ministry of each church and most of all a faithful companion and my best friend. I am still serving as pastor of Goodes Creek Baptist Church, where I am now in my 20th year. We have no children of our own, but have been blessed with so many kids, youth, and friends in the churches we have served over the years. To God be the glory!
